Heidelberg Catechism — Lord's Day 2

First Part — Guilt

3. From where do you know your misery?

From the Law of God.1

  1. Rom 3:20, 7:7

Romans 3:20 20 For by works of the law no human being [1] will be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin.

    Romans 7:7 The Law and Sin
    7 What then shall we say? That the law is sin? By no means! Yet if it had not been for the law, I would not have known sin. For I would not have known what it is to covet if the law had not said, “You shall not covet.”

4. What does the Law of God require of us?

Christ teaches us in sum, Matthew 22: “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.1 This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, You shall love your neighbor as yourself.2 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.”3

  1. Deut 6:5;
  2. Lev 19:18; Gal 5:14;
  3. Lk 10:27

Deuteronomy 6:5 You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.

Leviticus 19:18 18 You shall not take vengeance or bear a grudge against the sons of your own people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the Lord.

Galatians 5:14 14 For the whole law is fulfilled in one word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”

Luke 10:27 27 And he answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.”

5. Can you keep all this perfectly?

No,1 for I am prone by nature to hate God and my neighbor.2

  1. Rom 3:10-12, 23; 1 Jn 1:8, 10;
  2. Gen 6:5, 8:21; Jer 17:9; Rom 7:23, 8:7; Eph 2:3; Tit 2:3

Romans 3:10-12 10 as it is written:“None is righteous, no, not one;11 no one understands;no one seeks for God. 12 All have turned aside; together they have become worthless;no one does good, not even one.”

Romans 3:23 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

1 John 1:8 8 If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

1 John 1:10 10 If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

Genesis 6:5 5 The Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.

Genesis 8:21 21 And when the Lord smelled the pleasing aroma, the Lord said in his heart, “I will never again curse [1] the ground because of man, for the intention of man’s heart is evil from his youth. Neither will I ever again strike down every living creature as I have done.

Jeremiah 17:9 9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?

Romans 7:23 23 but I see in my members another law waging war against the law of my mind and making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members.

Romans 8:7 7 For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God’s law; indeed, it cannot.

Ephesians 2:3 3 among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body [2] and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind.

Titus 2:3 3 Older women likewise are to be reverent in behavior, not slanderers or slaves to much wine. They are to teach what is good,
