The Gospel of John — Bible Study

I like to invite you to join us in an online Bible Study of the Gospel of John. We will take you through the Book of John in the next few months. John is a unique gospel compared to Matthew, Mark and Luke.  Many materials that are found in Matthew, Mark and Luke are not found in John. For example:

Jesus’ teaching on the kingdom of God
The Sermon on the Mount
Jesus Baptism by John
Institution of the Lord’s Supper
The transfiguration
Jesus’ temptations in the wilderness
The garden event (Gethsemane)
Demon exorcisms

John is also known as the “beloved disciple”. I believe that John has a deeper relationship with Jesus than any other disciples.

One of his disciples, whom Jesus loved, was reclining at table close to Jesus, (John 13:23 ESV)
When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby…(John 19:26 ESV)
So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved ..(John 20:2 ESV)
That disciple whom Jesus loved therefore said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” ….(John 21:7 ESV)
Peter turned and saw the disciple whom Jesus loved ….. (John 21:20 ESV)

The main purpose of this Gospel I believe is in (John 20:31 ESV) “but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.” John is not writing a narrative of the life of Christ but to show us the deity of Christ. John is pointing out to us the Son of God and he is fully man and fully God. He is also trying to show us the false doctrines that are spreading throughout Israel.

Here are some recommended resources you can use for this study:

ESV Study Bible
The Gospel According to John (Pillar New Testament Commentary)
John (NIV Application Commentary)
The Gospel of John (RC Sproul)
John (John MacArthur)

I hope and pray that you will benefit from this study. I will post some questions from each lesson and encourage you to post your answers online by leaving a comment on the post. We will start the first lesson next week. Join us!
